I discussed with the other mod and basically what we decided is, if you want it to repeatedly reset and kill him slowly each time or something like that it'd be fine (with a penalty for each death). Or you can heal him completely. Its up to you!

And using it as a check for his powers is definitely more than alright with me. I think you're good. :)
